The October Inkle Challenge!

In the month of October I’m running a fun and interactive Inkle challenge!

This challenge has proved to be very popular with new and experienced inkle weavers. You can see a gallery of the beautiful work completed in the last challenge here.

If you have an inkle loom just sitting around and haven’t started weaving with it yet, this challenge will be perfect to get you going!

Or, perhaps you’ve woven a couple of bands but have lost motivation? You will also benefit from this challenge.

Maybe you are even a seasoned inkle band weaver but you love to weave alongside others are share your work. Then welcome, you are in the right place 😀

How does the challenge work?

The challenge will run for the entire month of October. The idea is to weave at least one finished inkle band (though you can absolutely weave as many as you like!) and share your project in the specially created Facebook challenge group.

Within this group there will be lots of information, posts from the last challenge and previously recorded live videos.

You will be supported by your fellow group members (and me!) to successfully complete your band and there will be all kinds of discussions to inspire you. It is also the perfect opportunity to problem solve and troubleshoot.

How do I join the challenge?

Firstly, make sure you’re on my mailing list so I can contact you, send you updates and special offers.

Next up, you need to be enrolled in the Inkle Weaving course at the Online Weaving School. This can be part of a single purchase or membership. If you have a membership, you are already enrolled in this class and can participate in the challenge for free. You will find the link and password to the challenge group at the top of your class list.

Once you’re enrolled in the class you will have access to the link and password for the Facebook group and can sign up, although the challenge does not officially begin until October.

Do I have to work on a specific band project?

I recommend that you choose one of the band projects from the class, according to your current level. The class includes and plain weave band, a tubular band and a baltic pick up band. It also provides instructions for designing your own band, so you may opt to do that.

What do I need to participate?

You will need an inkle loom to join this challenge. Inkle looms are quite affordable and a great way to get weaving. I use an Ashford Inkle loom, available at the following stockists:

Ashford inkle loom, The Woolery, USA

Ashford inkle loom, Thread Collective, Australia

Ashford inkle loom, Amazon

You will also need some suitable yarn to weave a band. There is a discussion of yarns within the class and this will also be discussed further in the Facebook group if needed, but I find 8/2 cotton (this is my favourite brand) a really good starting point.

What if I don’t finish my inkle band by the end of October?

Well, thankfully there are no inkle police, so you don’t have to worry about being apprehended if you don’t finish 😂 It is my hope that all participants will finish a band that they are proud of, but at the end of the day, life happens. If you can’t finish within the time frame, it’s ok. It’s more important to make a start.

And of course, once you purchase the class you have lifetime access to it and can complete it at any time that suits you. If you have a membership you have access to the class while your membership remains active and up to date.

What if I’m not on Facebook?

I get it, I’m not a fan of Facebook either. It is however the best place for me to host a challenge like this. If you’re not on Facebook you can still participate by going through the course (and taking advantage of the discount price). You can still interact and share pictures, questions or thoughts under any course video or PDF.

When can I begin?

At the end of September I will send out an email as a reminder that the challenge is beginning (so it’s important to be on my mailing list!) If you are a member of the Online Weaving School you can begin the class and join the Facebook group at any time, or alternatively you can wait until the challenge officially opens, the choice is yours.
