Krokbragd Patterns Interview and Giveaway!

Have you all met Debby Greenlaw before? I hope you have, but if not, you may want to read over this post where I reviewed Debby’s first book, the wonderful “Krokbragd – How to Design and Weave”.

*This post contains affiliate links. For further information, please see my disclosure policy.

I am so excited to share the news that Debby has written and released a brand new follow up krokbragd book, titled “Krokbragd Patterns”.

Save

I am doubly excited to announce that, thanks to Debby’s generosity, one of you lucky readers will have the chance to win a personally signed copy of Krokbragd Patterns! Entry details are available at the end of this post.

I thought it the perfect time to have a chat with Debby so that you can all get to know her a little better and find out more about the new book, so grab a cup of tea and get comfy!

Thank you for taking the time to be my blog guest today 😊 Can you start by telling us a little about your weaving journey so far?

“Weaving was my entry into the wonderful world of fiber arts. I am a relatively “late bloomer” in this area, not starting the journey until I retired in 2016 after a 40+ year career as a nurse/nurse practitioner. I purchased an Ashford Sampleit loom at a local fiber festival just to see if I would like this weaving thing . . . I loved it. That lead to a floor loom, a dye garden, a spinning wheel, and eventually knitting needles and crochet hooks!”

Save

What looms do you have and which one gets the most use?

“I have a Leclerc Nilus 4-shaft floor loom, a Kromski Harp Forte rigid heddle, and a Louët Jane 8-shaft table loom. By far the Jane gets used the most!“

You are perhaps most well known for your krokbragd weaving. What is about krokbragd that you love?

“First, I’m drawn to the Scandinavian aesthetic. My heritage says I’m German through and through, but I think there must be some Norse hidden in there. I love the simplicity of design and the color combinations of Scandinavian weaving. Krokbragd embodies both of those characteristics.”

Save

Your first book, “Krokbragd: How to Design and Weave” had been immensely popular. What lead you to write a book all about krokbragd?

“Simply, there wasn’t a book written on the subject. In fact, several years ago, there were very limited resources available on krokbragd. I saw a social media post that said, “someone should write a book,” and I thought I can do that!”

You are just about to release your second book, “Krokbragd Patterns”. Did you decide to write a follow up book based on the feedback received from your first book? What excites you the most  about this book?

“You’re absolutely correct.  I received emails, comments, and even a review asking for a krokbragd pattern book.

Hmmm . . . what excites me the most. It would have to be the test weavers. Eighteen delightful women answered my request to be test weavers for the book’s projects. Seeing my designs come alive in their talented hand was so exciting. Their feedback, enthusiasm, and encouragement were invaluable to me during the designing and writing process.”

You are blessed to live in a beautiful location. How do you most enjoy spending your days? What should visitors to your region look out for as a “must do”?

“God has graciously blessed my husband and me with a beautiful place to live, a small farm in rural South Carolina. We share our space with 21 dairy goats, a mini donkey, chickens, a barn kitty, and a playful pup! There are many routine farm chores to keep up with, along with the occasional urgency/emergency. I’ve found my nurse practitioner skills translate well to farm animals! In addition to fiber arts, I also like to garden.

South Carolina is diverse in natural beauty. It is one of the smaller U.S. states but stretches from the seashore to the mountains. It is also rich in history and historical sites and gardens.”

You can find more great weaving information on Debby’s blog, Flora & Fiber. Books can be purchased through the blog, on Amazon or in selected stores.

I’m still relatively new to weaving since I bought my first loom last October. I’m hooked. So is my husband who has, a little table loom of his own. He has an engineer’s eye on design planning but I need patterns and instruction. I’ve already looked into Kelly’s class on Krokbragd and downloaded some of the instructions. That’ll be my plan for this summer. I’m thinking of setting up a table on the back deck for the warm summer evenings. 🙂

Just wanted to add one additional thought and for which a large book of Krokbragd patterns would be just the “right medicine”: This Scandinavian weave structure has been a wonderful cure for “Pandemic Brain Disease”, both uplifting when something was needed to get through the long days, relaxing when stress levels rose, and stimulating when the brain seemed to be “on hold”. My bucket list is to play with more and more Krokbragd patterns, weaving each one up in a coaster/mug rug. Maybe once the pandemic is over (!) this will also become “Alzheimer’s Prevention” exercising both sides of the brain. I’m so glad for Debby’s resources coming into existence. Thanks!.

What an inspiration! I am a fiber addict who is always expanding my skills and knowledge – much like I do with everything! My husband and I took a leap of faith after all the kids were gone and left my home state of Wyoming to fulfill our dreams. We finally settled in Virginia where we found a 100+-year-old farmhouse in desperate need of repair on just enough land to raise small animals and have a big garden. I have always had dreams of being like my grandmother. She was always working on a quilt or crocheting or embroidering and baking and gardening. I have found my dreams coming true in Virginia and now I have purchased a weaving business from my dear best friend’s mother. To quote her, she is passing on the shuttle to the next generation. I am hoping to live, learn and pass it on through the inspiration of the strong, beautiful women who go before me. This book will add just one more color to life’s weaving. Grace and Peace!

Why? Because, as a fairly inexperienced weaver with some Scandinavian connections, I took a course a little over a year ago where we wove krokbragd on 4-harness table looms prepared for us by the teacher, and I loved the process of weaving the designs, the possibility for color combinations, and the many pattern possibilities. I’m excited about the possibility of weaving some of the patterns in Debbie’s book to use for chair seats and wall hangings! I also am looking forward to making them on my rigid heddle loom, and hope to get started in a little over a month through Kelly’s krokbragd course.

I too was late to weaving, only starting to learn last year at the grand old age of 64! Of course, age is irrelevant in the world of crafting and I’m excited to learn all sorts of new techniques. I started my weaving journey with one of Kelly’s classes and completed 2 scarves and am now excited to try krokbragd as I am enchanted by the possibilities. A wall hanging for our craft wall seems inevitable! Even the cover of Kelly’s book is exciting and I can see soooo many possibilities. Like some others who have written comments, I didn’t get started in weaving until I retired from teaching after 30+ years. I started by building a frame loom and experimenting, making mistakes, and learning the basics. When I was convinced that weaving something I enjoyed, I invested in an Ashford 24″ rigid heddle loom..During the last six years, I have found terrific guidance in videos and online articles, along with lots of patterns which have allowed me to weave many towels and table mats among other things. My first experiment with krokbragd was a rug which came out so lovely and thick, I was hooked. With help from your class, Kelly, I learned more about krokbragd and made mug rugs with tulips and sheep and zig zags! Like others have clearly commented, I have wished there was a book that was full of patterns for weaving krokbragd on a rigid needle loom. I’m really excited to know it’s now a reality!

Now life is almost slower and I have time to learn to weave with my hands-on yarns. Ever on a budget, I scour the internet and read books to learn what I know. I first saw Krokbragd and fell in love with the colors and patterns. I love color and texture so I had to learn more and recently purchased “How to Design and Weave.” I need more! I recently purchased a second hand 8shaft table loom and have been learning about patterns on there. But Krokbragd is still on my mind and I purchased a pattern for my RH loom to try Krokbragd. I AM COMING FROM GREECE. IN “THE ODYSSEY” BY HOMER , PENELOPE WAS WEAVING UNTIL HER HUSBAND CAME BACK TO ITHACA ISLAND. I AM A MUM OF TWO BOYS, WHEN I BOUGHT MY LOOM, I TOLD TO MY FRIENDS, I WILL BE WEAVING AS PENELOPE UNTIL MY BOYS BECOME ADULTS. SO NOW I AM ON THE ROAD AND I AM LEARNING WEAVING. YOU ARE A SOURCE FOR ME. WEAVING IS LIKE THE WAVES OF THE SEA. THANK YOU.
The Odyssey is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer.
Homer’s Odyssey tells the story of how, during her husband’s long absence after the Trojan War, many chieftains of Ithaca and nearby islands become her suitors. To spare herself their importunities she insists that they wait until she has woven a shroud for Laertes, father of Odysseus. Every night for three years, until one of her maids reveals the secret, she unravels the piece that she has woven by day so that she will not have to give up hope for the return of her beloved husband and remarry. When at length Odysseus does return, she makes him prove his identity and finally accepts him.

Most times weaving is a solidary act. The weaver is often left to solve problems that arise on their own or to try and stretch their mind to create new patterns/ideas. Then comes along a pioneer who puts these ideas, solutions, and patterns into print for everyone to be inspired, learn from, and enjoy. These women and men preserve the history of weaving or stretch the boundaries of what weavers once thought was possible. By doing this weavers are blessed with knowing there are reference sources to ensure that the history of weaving will be passed down to future weaving generations. This is the reason I would like to win a copy of your book. Thank you.

The joy of weaving began when I inherited my first loom upon a death of a friends dad. It is a simple homemade 2 harness rug loom but has made many sturdy, handsome rugs. Since then I have purchased an Ashford rigid heddle loom and a LeClerc Dorothy loom. This joy of weaving continues to grow as I expand my knowledge of color, texture, structure and weaving. Hopefully it helps keep my brain working as weaving using different techniques requires a lot of thinking! Krokbragd is o technique I have seen but have been hesitant to try.

We have had a very colourfull and beautiful wall hanging in my parent’s house for about 50 years. It is made by my grandmother who was from Karelian. Now that piece of art is in my home and I have been watching it a lot. It gives me joy, good spirit and also gratitude. I started to weave 5 years ago. About 6months ago I saw first Krokbrags works and patterns. Suddenly I understood what technique my grandmother had used in the wall hanging I have. Since then I have been learning and doing samplers (thanks to Kelly). One day I will do the same kind of work than my grandmother has done. I still have few mysteries in that pattern but I hope the book will help me and learn more this wonderful technique.

I started weaving during the first covid-lockdown, lata year. I quickly felt drawn to krokbragd, because I love colorful cloth and I was already a big fan of scandinavian design. With the help of your krokbragd course for the rigid heddle loom and Debby’s first book, I learned so much. I recently got myself a beautiful table loom, to cheer myself up, really, because in the Netherlands we have been in lockdown since december, with no end in sight because our government manages to be one of the western countries that slowest to vaccinate people. Because I have an auto-immune disease, this means I have weeks, possibly months of self isolation ahead. It gets me down sometimes, but weaving always seems to lift my spirits, and this amazing book would certainly bring a lot of joy in dark times!

They took quite a while to finish, as I mostly used single strands of needlepoint yarn, (Obtained with cumulative purchases a few decades ago at thrift stores)

I was hoping your blog would tell us what breed (or breeds) Debby’s remarkably pretty brown and white dairy goats are. We have sweet little brow and black Oberhasli dairy goats, but Debby’s goats are just plain GORGEOUS (drool!).

The third heddles and heddlebblocks for my two heddle looms have shipped and should arrive next week (yippee!). I’ve tried the heddle rod and pick-up stick routine, and think I’ll prefer using the third heddle after viewing Kelly’s very clear THREE HEDDLES ADVENTURE! lesson. Then I’ll be all set to branch out into the exciting krokbragd adventure!

Why do I want to win the Krogbragd patterns book? Ever since I spotted Kelly’s lesson on krokbragd, I’ve had a passion to weave a whole bunch of the stuff: as colourful wall hangings…and more! Our home has very dull mud-coloured walls and a 76 year-old husband with a rather mud-coloured personality to go with the walls (lol), and BOTH could DEFINITELY use a perk-me-up!

Other home accents I want to weave include book and notebook covers, placemats( to encourage cheerier meal),, a set of mug rugs, and (is it possible??) to make a lap blanket with krokbragd? Surely, it must be very difficult for anyone to remain depressed around such cheerful, bright patterns. So it’s time to give krokbragd a go and fill this home with it, then start making more for gifting to family and friends. Who wouldn’t cherish something woven just for them in a krokbragd pattern?!! Household furnishings…beware! Bright, cheerful colour is definitely on the way!

I’m quite a new weaver and I’d like to win the book because Krokbragd looks very interesting after watching Kelly’s videos and I’d like to try different patterns

I fell in love with Krokbragd using Debby’s first book. I’ve almost completed seat cushions for my dining chairs using Krokbragd. I look forward to making more things with this weave. Thank you.

I am fascinated by Krokbragd and have already purchased the first book. I would love to win the pattern book! Like Debby, I came to weaving later in life, but am addicted. I have a rigid heddle loom, a table loom, and a floor loom; and I keep them all warped. I don’t think I would have survived Covid 19 without weaving. I do have vision issues, and my greatest fear is that I won’t be able to see well enough to weave!

Having just started weaving this year, I made my first krokbragd sampler and had such fun playing with different patterns. I would love some new inspiration and too get more practice at this, especially to share with my Swedish relatives!

I’d love to receive a copy of the book! Krokbragd patterns are so “simple” but elegant in their simplicity. I must have some Scandinavian in my heritage also. The nordic colors are very appealing to me as well. I have your first book and would love to get the pattern book.

I volunteered to be a tester for the book but had to withdraw. I’d dearly like to be able to see what I missed!

As a beginner Weaver, her book was one of the first I purchased. People were amazed at some of my early projects but by following Debby’s wonderful instructions I was able to complete my project and learn more about weaving. Even if I do not win her book, I will most certainly purchase it.

I love the colors and patterns of Krokbragd weaving. I do not believe I have any Nordic heritage but the combinations speak to me. I have not yet tried weaving Krokbragd. This article has inspired me to think about doing so.

I would love to win the Krokbragd Book as the weaving looks complicated…but isn’t. Just have to pay close attention. It would be an heirloom autographed book and give me years of weaving pleasure!

I just picked up a copy of Debbie’s first book and made my husband a rug for his side of the bed… I still have a few yards of warp left and would love to try some new patterns!

    Hi Kelly

I would love to win this prize as I have always wanted to try the Krokbragd weaving method, but I really am clueless on how to create a beautiful pattern. The book would help get me going, give me insights on the technique as well as help teach me to create my own patterns. As a new weaver, that would be a tremendous help! Best of luck to all who enter!

Moro em um pais (Brasil) carente de literatura para tecelões. E no momento fica inviavel importar esses livros. Adoraria ganhar essa publicação, iria impulsionar o meu aprendizado.
