Easing into unschooling?

by Kelly 3 Comments

This year has been quite a happy one for me personally and for my family too. Pondering over this recently led me to realise how drastically my approach to the home education of our children has changed.

Although I think of our style as “classical”, in my heart and mind I’ve been leaning towards what some have termed “unschooling”. I guess the term can apply to anyone who chooses not to send their child/ren to a typical school, but it does seem to receive a bad rap.

Does unschooling mean that Mum flits around doing what she pleases while the kids languish in boredom and nothingness? Of course not! To me, unschooling is living a lifestyle of learning, having the time to follow your own learning pursuits and build skills independently as well as together.

Now, I don’t think of my family as unschoolers. But I do know this. Since I relaxed our formal learning schedule things have changed for the better. We all have more time and we all use our time effectively (for the most part). We appreciate not being tied to a strict schedule that dictates what we do and when we do it. Isn’t that one of the reasons I don’t send my children to school anyway? It sure is!

Yesterday a few events highlighted the positive changes. My husband is usually home on Mondays, so we use it as a day off rather than a “school work day”. In the morning the two older girls (6 & 7) read books about dinosaurs together and had discussions about the same, then the older girl worked on her knitting and stitching projects while the younger one played with Lego. Meanwhile, the littlest in our family (4) was in her room setting up a “farm”. Our son (13) went out with his Dad to run errands the spent the larger part of the afternoon formulating and testing mathematical equations that I’ve never seen before! A year ago, this boy hated maths. Other parts of the day are used for art and craft work, writing, exercise, playing (individually and together), reading (lots of!), prayer and family activities. There is always plenty to do.

I was asked the other day whether we are unschoolers. My reply was “can we be in-betweeners?” We’re not throwing our “school” books away, there is a lot of value in sitting down to do bookwork, especially from a self disciplinary aspect and ensuring that basic education is covered. But I do find it truly amazing what a child can achieve when given the space to breathe.

I didn’t have time…

by Kelly 3 Comments

I didn’t have time to finish the ironing today. I didn’t have time to clean the toilet. Or to scrub that desperately dirty shower. Or to dust the layers of built up dust. Or to tidy my sewing table. Nope, no time to vacuum out the van either.

But I did have time to do art and craft with the children. I had time to take them to the playground to play in the sun. I had time to make them tasty and wholesome meals. I had time to wash and hand their clothes. I had time to respond to the seemingly endless “watch me Mum!”s and smile and laugh where appropriate. I had lots of time for hugs and kisses.

And the day is not over yet! I will have time to bathe them and wash their hair. We will all pray together. We will read books and snuggle together.

I’m annoyed and disappointed that I didn’t have time to do everything that I could have today. But I’m so grateful that I made time to do all the things I should.

How do you do it all? Aka myth busting big time!

by Kelly 1 Comment

The question I am constantly asked is “How do you manage to do it all?” and the answer is so simple.
I don’t.
I’m imperfect. And the truth is, I’m probably more imperfect than you.
Just because I’m creative and love to make things doesn’t mean I do a better job than anyone else, it just means I prioritise creativity because I love it.
Just because my kids are (thankfully) well behaved in public most of the time doesn’t mean they don’t squabble amongst themselves often, disobey their parents and tend towards laziness, because, believe me – they do all these things regularly!
Just because my husband and I seem to have a perfect marriage doesn’t mean we don’t argue and treat each other unfairly at times, because that happens too.
Every time I choose to do something creative it is time that I’m not spending doing something that probably needs to be done. Perhaps my “admirers” are actually better homemakers and mothers than I am because I make the time to do things I want to do and they are more selfless.
So next time you look at someone and think they have it all together just remember that no one is better than another, we are all God’s children and all very imperfect.
God bless you all and have a very happy weekend!

In my classroom.

by Kelly 5 Comments

In my classroom the learning is flexible. Children are all different so why should they all learn the same things at the same rate just because they’re the same age?

In my classroom there is time for each student to have individual tuition.

In my classroom there are no set seats and in fact, if you don’t feel like sitting down you don’t have to (you can even go to the toilet when you want to and without asking!)

There are no bullies in my classroom. All students are equal, and although they sometimes tire of one another’s company, they are still expected to be kind and respectful.

In my classroom there are no set plans. If it’s a beautiful day we go out. If we don’t feel like working we   do something else.

In my classroom prayer is encouraged.

In my classroom the truth is taught.

My classroom is governed by a higher authority. Not the Principal, not the state or federal government and not even me. It is governed by Almighty God and we work at doing His will.

In my classroom there is much laughter, hugs, kisses, respect and love.

My classroom is nothing like the classrooms of my childhood that make me shudder to this day.

My classroom is my home and my students are my children.

We love spending our lives together and wouldn’t change it for the world – thanks be to God!

Melbourne Aquarium

by Kelly Leave a Comment

My Dad very kindly gifted us a family pass to the aquarium and we went along this week.

These little guys are so cute!
We did go when it first opened about 10 years ago and we were really impressed with how much it’s improved.

Aren’t jellyfish the most majestic creatures?

I really recommend a visit if you haven’t already, there is so much to see and the huge glass room and tunnel are such a highlight. Some of the rays were absolutely massive and it’s a wonderful experience to watch them floating overhead.

A good week with generous people

by Kelly 3 Comments

I was the lucky winner of Hilary’s giveaway recently and received the parcel today. Some beautiful charm squares for small projects.

And this I really love.

A gorgeous sewing kit, just look at the inside. It has a scissors keep, pin cushion, needle keeper and zippered pouch for extras.
Trust me Hilary, this will be very well used!

I also received not one but 2 boxes of Seton books from a virtual stranger. These books are worth so much money and are in great condition. They also happen to suit the level my son is at. I’ve always wanted to try quality Catholic curriculum but the cost has always been something that restricted me, so these books are truly the answer to my prayers.
I would like to say thank you and God bless all you generous people out there šŸ™‚

Winds of change

by Kelly 9 Comments

This week I have done things differently – you may have noticed my absence here and it has been deliberate. Time away from blogging, facebook, twitter and all things online has allowed me some breathing space this week. Not only that – but I have committed myself to taking the children out every day while the weather is fine. What an improvement this has made! Yes, I’m totally exhausted but in a good way. Now to share some of our week with you:

Lemon and poppy seed drizzle cake, recipe here
I love how my 5 year old has such a strong mothering instinct, she attracts little ones wherever she goes.
I love how my children are growing and changing and feel so blessed to be a part of it.
Op shop finds + daytura flowers = happiness!
Enjoying local sights.
Jar makeovers with paper, mod podge, colour papers and ribbon.
I printed out an old picture I like, soaked in tea and dried. Then coloured lightly with watercolour pencil and sealed with mod podge. Attached and layered with mod podge also. Tied a velvet ribbon around and placed some dried poppy heads in. Easy!
I’ve re – committed to my desire to live fully on baked bread. I’m going pretty well with no bought bread for about 2 weeks. I bake it every second day.
Slow and steady wins the race. I hope I’ve finished stippling this quilt by M’s 4th birthday next month!
Rock cakes are a constant favourite here. I’ll try to post the recipe on my other blog sometime soon.
If I haven’t visited your blog lately I do apologise – I don’t want to become one of these bloggers who expect comments but don’t give any. Perhaps you’ll decide to remain silent today in protest!
Hope your week has been as productive as mine. God bless!

We survived – we even thrived a little!

by Kelly 2 Comments

The first day back homeschooling was the stuff of nightmares as I dealt with children who had forgotten how to be good students! Thankfully, it got progressively better as the week continued and now we’re well and truly back into a good routine.
I even got a little time to sew and dye.
Little Miss 3.5 has been asking for one of my twirly circle skirts for some time. I received the cotton lawn I’d been waiting on and once she saw the roll there were no more excuses!
In her favourite colours – purple and pink. I think she likes it!
This one is an elasticated A – line that I dyed in a spiral.
It’s destined for my Etsy shop.
I love the summery colours!
It’s so rewarding to be able to make clothes from scratch.

Another homeschooling year begins…

by Kelly 6 Comments

Don’t be surprised if I’m not around much – we start back tomorrow.
Mixed feelings here, I think I’ve enjoyed the break too much, plus I haven’t achieved everything I wanted to over the break. I’m also faced with teaching a 10 year old, a 5 year old who has started reading, a 3 year old who wants to learn everything her siblings are learning and an 18 month old who gets into everything all the time!!
At least I’m pretty organised:

Books – check
Timetable written – check
Enthusiastic and motivated teacher and learners – umm.. we’ll get there I think!

All the best to those who are homeschooling this year, especially newbies – if you need help or advice give us a shout.

On embroidery, business and list writing

by Kelly 6 Comments

So I didn’t get time to stitch lastnight as I’d hoped but I thought I’d share one of the embroidery projects I have on the go. One of my Mother-in-law’s oldies that was never started, a printed linen table cloth. I was really unsure of colourways but eventually decided on a fresh and modern take, so nice and vibrant but harmonious colours.

I was more than a little excited to open a little box of my very first business cards! Surely someone will take me seriously now? (Total tongue in cheek). At least I don’t have to hastily scrawl down my details when someone is interested in my work now, and these certainly look better than my handwriting!

Now for the list writing. Last year when I was homeschooling with a baby and life was mostly an insane and hardly bearable chaotic rush I let a lot of things slip – including the writing of lists. I’m determined to start afresh and make this year different.
Yesterday I crossed off 8 items out of 11 – pretty good for me! What wasn’t completed yesterday transfers to today’s list. This is so important for my organisation, crossing items off my list makes me feel in control and makes a sometimes overwhelming day of tasks achievable. (I can just imagine Posie nodding emphatically!)
If you feel snowed under try writing lists – even if you only get one thing crossed off it is a way of laying out your tasks so that rather than feeling that you’re drowning in work you can have a detached sense of what you have to do.
Once you have a basic daily list you will probably find yourself writing a list for everything – goals (short and long term), shopping, trips away, purchases needing to be made, schedules….
